On October 3rd, Dave Wexler, board member of Allegheny Valley Baseball and 4-year season ticket holder to University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball games, attended the annual Pitt Fan Fest and Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair at the Peterson Events Center on the campus at Pitt. The event, which drew several hundred fans, highlighted the 2009 Pitt men’s and women’s basketball teams, and included various fan-oriented events, behind-the-scenes tours of the Pitt basketball facilities, family activities, “Chalk Talks” with coaches and student-athletes, and the Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair. Also, attending the event was Shavonte Zellous, who graduated from and finished her athletic eligibility at Pitt at the end of the 2008-09 season, and became a star guard with the WNBA’s Detroit Shock. The open tryouts conducted by the Allegheny Valley team before each Greater Pittsburgh Federation League season was more important than ever this year.
Many players from last season’s Allegheny Valley team left to form two new teams.
Allegheny Valley’s open tryouts are a unique feature in the Fed League where most team’s rosters stay pretty close to the same from year to year. Those tryouts this season yielded some promising talent, including a trio of players from the east suburbs who have helped Allegheny Valley to a 10-7-1 record a little past the midway point of the regular season.
Former AVB Player Impresses with BlueSox
Brian Youchak, for several seasons a standout outfielder with Allegheny Valley Baseball, is making a significant impact for the Butler (PA) BlueSox of the Prospect League (formerly, the Frontier Professional League). Youchak is doing for the BlueSox what he does best for his Johns Hopkins University team — HIT! To date, he’s batting .400, with 12 RBI and a .596 slugging percentage in just 17 games. All of us affiliated with AVB wish Brian much good fortune with the BlueSox.
